Large pair of porcelain and biscuit candlesticks, Haviland

Pair of figural glazed and unglazed porcelain candlesticks. An elegant couple is turning towards each other as playing hide and seek. Water coming out of a jar on both bases. The branches of the candlesticks are decorated with gold. The figures are painted in soft pastel colours. 

This pair of candelabras was presented at the Crystal Palace in New York by Haviland Brothers and Company in 1853 at the “World’s fair”, the first international fair organized in the United States. They encountered great success with it and they were rewarded with a first prize for the quality of their decorated porcelain. Haviland’s production was almost exclusively made for the American market. The candlestick with the gentleman was shown on a advertising poster for the manufactory.
